Thinking of a Christmas Puppy or Kitten? Some Tips

There’s nothing cuter than finding a puppy or kitten under the tree on Christmas morning, but choosing a pet that’s not right for your family can turn into a sad experience for everyone. By doing a little research and making a thoughtful choice, you can find a life-long companion that fits right in. Here are a few tips:

Choose a Better Time to Get a New Pet

Actually, Christmas may not be the best time to bring home a new pet. Animals need to adjust to their new environment with quiet time, attention, and a routine and busy holiday activities don’t always allow for that.

Wrap Up the “Idea”
of a Pet First

If you want to give the kids a pet for Christmas but would rather bring the animal home when things are calmer, you can wrap up a kitty condo or a puppy food dish, collar, and leash with a note attached saying: “This is for the new kitten/puppy we’ll be picking out together after Christmas!”

Good Pets from Local Shelters

Choose a pet from a local animal shelter or rescue group. Shelters are overflowing with wonderful pets, and you can see how the animal interacts with each member of the family before you bring them home. You can also check out its temperament to make sure it’s a good fit. You may find that the animal you bond with wasn’t what you had in mind, but turns out to be the perfect pet for your family.

Learn about Pet Traits, Breeds, and Expense

Find out about the traits of different breeds and what’s involved with caring for and training a new pet. A lot more goes into a harmonious family-pet relationship than meets the eye, so it’s a good idea to buy a book or look online for information. Also, consider the cost of owning a pet. Between veterinarian bills for shots, spaying/neutering, and health issues, along with food, toys, and other everyday expenses, it can add up.
